May 8 (Reuters) - An Alabama regulation that makes it a felony to offer gender-affirming medical treatment to transgender youth went into effect on Sunday whereas a federal judge weighs whether or not to grant a movement to place a short lived hold on it.
The legislation makes it a crime punishable by up to 10 years in jail to provide puberty blockers, hormones and medical procedures to transgender youth under 19.
Governor Kay Ivey had signed the invoice on April 8. An analogous but not as far-reaching regulation in Arkansas was blocked by the courts last year before it may go into impact.
