16-year-old arrested; planned shooting with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass college capturing that could have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press launch. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no school that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging gadget materials and threatening to commit a criminal offense which will result in dying or great bodily damage.

Police stated they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a scholar at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found elements to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and digital gadgets that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teen's arrest.

"School safety stays a excessive precedence for the division," police said in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teenager was attempting to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens informed the varsity's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teenager's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety workers about this investigation and, as is our normal follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive School campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation period, we had been assured that this particular person did not pose an immediate threat to the Berkeley Excessive College group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district could pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the scholar. 

In addition, a town hall assembly titled: 'Tips on how to Discuss to Youngsters About School Violence' offered by Alameda County Office of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
