The policy, disclosed in leaked emails Musk despatched to Tesla's government workers Tuesday, was first reported by electrical vehicle information website Electrek.

"Anyone who needs to do distant work have to be within the office for a minimum (and I imply *minimal*) of 40 hours per week or depart Tesla. That is less than we ask of manufacturing unit employees," Musk wrote, adding that the workplace should be the worker's major workplace where the opposite staff they commonly work together with are primarily based — "not a remote department office unrelated to the job duties."

Musk said he would personally assessment any request for exemption from the coverage, however that for probably the most half, "When you do not show up, we'll assume you may have resigned."

Tesla (TSLA) didn't respond to a request for comment on the policy change, but Musk appeared to substantiate it in a tweet of his own early Wednesday when asked on Twitter, "Hey Elon...any extra remark to people who think coming into work is an antiquated idea?" Musk replied: "They need to faux to work some other place."The coverage is totally at odds with that of the opposite tech firm Musk is making an attempt to buy, Twitter (TWTR), which has beforehand introduced workers can continue to do business from home "without end" if they prefer. "Wherever you're feeling best and inventive is the place you will work and that includes working from dwelling full-time forever," CEO Parag Agrawal wrote in a word to Twitter's almost 100,000 employees in March, simply before Musk's interest in owning the social media platform was disclosed. At Tesla, however, that won't be the case. It is particularly necessary that senior managers be seen in the office, Musk mentioned, including that was one of many reasons he basically lived on the Tesla manufacturing facility in Fremont, California, when the company was struggling to increase manufacturing in 2017 and 2018.

"If I had not carried out that, Tesla would way back have gone bankrupt," he wrote. "There are in fact firms that do not require this, but when was the last time they shipped an important new product? It has been some time."

He added, "Tesla has and will create and truly manufacture probably the most thrilling and significant products of any firm on Earth," he added. "This will not happen by phoning it in."

Surveys present nearly all of office workers favor the choice to work at home. Since reopening offices following Covid-19 shutdowns, many firms beyond Twitter have introduced increased flexibility for employees who need to work remotely, partly as a solution to retain or attract talent in a very tight labor market. But the world's richest person would not appear concerned about that dynamic.
