A California district attorney declined to file fees Tuesday against former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson after he was recorded on video in a bodily altercation with another passenger on a JetBlue flight.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe made the decision after having reviewed police stories and videos of the April 20 incident. Each the passenger, who has not been recognized, and Tyson requested that no costs be filed.
"Yesterday afternoon the San Mateo County District Legal professional’s Office concluded its overview of the case involving Mike Tyson at the San Francisco Airport on April 20, 2022 and the allegation that he dedicated a misdemeanor battery towards another passenger on an airplane whereas waiting on the terminal prior to departure," Wagstaffe said in an announcement.
"Our resolution is that we are going to not file any costs in opposition to Mr. Tyson based mostly on the circumstances surrounding the confrontation. These include the conduct of the victim main up to the incident, the interaction between Mr. Tyson and the victim, in addition to the requests of both the sufferer and Mr. Tyson that no charges be filed on this case," Wagstaffe said.
The case is now closed.
Cellphone video showed Tyson, 55, appearing to try to punch somebody who was pushing him away. Representatives for Tyson said the particular person was harassing Tyson. The video didn't present what happened before the altercation.
David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Martin Sabelli, attorneys for Tyson, responded to the choice to not file costs by thanking Wagstaffe, the San Mateo County sheriff and law enforcement businesses "for their careful, diligent, and professional work."
