Mother or father with hid weapon by accident shoots self whereas at Arlington ISD faculty, police say

Arlington police mentioned Duff Elementary School was placed on lockdown for a time Thursday after a father or mother with a hid weapon had his gun by accident go off, hitting the mother or father in the leg.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Arlington police stated Duff Elementary Faculty was positioned on lockdown for a time Thursday after a guardian with a concealed weapon had his gun unintentionally go off, hitting the parent within the leg.

The varsity had early launch and college students had been released on the planned time of 12:10 p.m.

In line with police, the father or mother, identified as 55-year-old Anthony White, dropped his gun and by accident shot himself. His injury was not serious.

The college district stated White was inside the constructing, near the foyer area, and never in the hallway near students when the gun went off.

Police and school officials mentioned there was no menace made and the mum or dad didn't have "malicious intent."

No college students or workers have been injured. The father or mother was taken to an area hospital after being shot within the leg. 

Arlington Police Chief Al Jones said after White was launched from the hospital, he was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon in prohibited places and discharge of a firearm in sure municipalities.

Within the two days since the Uvalde mass college shooting, there have been five cases in North Texas associated to guns brought to schools or threats made.

Arlington dad and mom said their minds immediately thought of the worst when they were notified.

No father or mother ever needs there to be a reason for them to get a text message saying their kid's college is on lockdown.

However since this week's deadly capturing at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, they can not assist however suppose the worst after they do.

"Once I obtained the textual content message, I was like, ‘Oh my God, something goes to happen.’ I was shocked," mother or father Karima Rasheed stated.

While most times, lockdowns are solely drills students have to participate in, Rasheed's son, Rami, mentioned that realizing what occurred earlier this week made this lockdown completely different. 

"I began seeing my classmates beginning to cry and our trainer obtained a notification on their cellphone saying someone was within the building," he mentioned.

Weapons should not allowed on school property, and parents FOX 4 spoke with said even when it was a mistake, the timing is just horrible.

"What are we going to do? They must go to highschool, and clearly, statistically, it is unlikely to happen, however you never want to be the one statistic. What if it is your children?" Matthew Mitchell said.

Mitchell lives across the street from Duff Elementary. His daughters go to another Arlington college. 

"I’m terrified, absolutely terrified. I’ve got twin six-year-olds that go to a distinct Arlington school and each time I hear there is a lockdown or a college shooting, my heart jumps into my throat," he stated.

Rasheed stated Thursday was the graduation day for sixth grade college students at Duff Elementary.

Whereas driving her son to highschool in the morning, she had a talk with him about Uvalde and what to do if one thing ever happened at his faculty.

"If something happened, you’ve acquired to run anyplace that’s safe and hide," she informed her youngster.

While some say the incident in Uvalde is too fresh to talk politics, Mitchell said something needs to be completed now. 

"They want to talk about it, they wish to marketing campaign on it, they want to fundraiser on it, but they don’t want to actually pass any laws and do anything," he added.
