Excessive schooler runs sub-4 minute mile, breaks file that had stood since 1965

Gary Martin, a senior at Archbishop Wood Excessive College Warminster, Penn., broke a prestigious track and field file at the Pennsylvania Catholic League Championship on Monday by operating a mile in beneath four minutes. Martin's run broke a file that had stood for nearly 60 years.

Martin ran a mile in 3:57:98 with out the aid of a pacer, breaking a record that had been set by Jim Ryun in 1965.

Ryun turned the first high schooler to run a mile in underneath four minutes in 1964, then broke his own record five instances before graduating. Ryun's time of record was 3:58.3, a mark which Martin broke by lower than a second.

Martin is now the 14th American high school athlete to break four minutes, and his time now ranks third all-time in outside runs. It should be noted, though, that Ryun was the one athlete to do so in excessive school-only competitors, with out the use of a pacer.

Martin's run was a significant milestone he prepares to attend the College of Virginia upon commencement. Speaking about his long-term goals, Martin hopes to develop into an Olympic athlete.

"I'd like to think that it isn't crazy for me to say that it is a dream now," Martin informed CBS Information. "Obviously, I am still a long methods away and have some work to do, however I am assured in my capacity. I have the dream, now I simply have to put the work in and chase it."

Based mostly on his beating Ryun's mark, Martin's desires might very well be in attain. After his record run in the Nineteen Sixties, Ryun went on to compete in three Olympic finals, successful silver in 1500m through the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
