Apple has discontinued the iPod, 20 years after it was launched.

The US tech large mentioned its iconic music player has been changed by other devices, making the iPod redundant.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's senior vice-president of worldwide advertising and marketing, said: "Right now, the spirit of iPod lives on.

"We've integrated an incredible music expertise throughout all of our merchandise, from the iPhone to the Apple Watch to HomePod mini, and throughout Mac, iPad, and Apple TV.

"And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with assist for spatial audio - there is not any higher approach to take pleasure in, discover, and experience music."

In October 2001, Steve Jobs debuted the original iPod and it was the first MP3 participant that would hold 1,000 songs and had a 10-hour battery life.

"With iPod, Apple has invented an entire new category of digital music participant that lets you put your whole music collection in your pocket and hearken to it wherever you go," he said at the time.

"With iPod, listening to music won't ever be the identical again."

Similar MP3 players released by Microsoft and Sony didn't have the same success because the iPod.

Apple has launched 5 versions of its music player - the Basic, Touch, Shuffle, Mini and Nano.

The company has been slowly killing its iPod vary in recent years, with cell phone technology enabling prospects to take heed to music providers on their phones.

In 2014, the basic click on wheel model was discontinued, and the Shuffle and Nano were killed off three years later.
