16-year-old arrested; planned capturing with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to participate in a mass faculty taking pictures that could have included a bombing at Berkeley High School, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing harmful machine supplies and threatening to commit against the law which is able to result in loss of life or great bodily injury.

Police said they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a pupil at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police mentioned they found components to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic items that could be used to create further weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty safety remains a excessive precedence for the division," police said in a press release. 

Particulars on whom the teen was making an attempt to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the school's group that the district was in shut contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon components, the district relied on police experience to evaluate any potential ongoing risk to its faculties. The district communicated with police on the scholar's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions throughout this period, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our standard practice, maintained close contact with our BPD College Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we had been assured that this individual did not pose an immediate risk to the Berkeley High Faculty group."

The district is conducting their own investigation on this matter. 

The district might pursue disciplinary action in opposition to the coed.
