16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley High, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass school taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley High Faculty, police say. 

The teen was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department said in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing damaging device supplies and threatening to commit against the law which will result in loss of life or great bodily harm.

Police mentioned they obtained a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a shooting that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police did not say if the teen was a student at Berkeley High College.

Upon executing the search warrant, police stated they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, several knives, and electronic items that could be used to create additional weapons. 

At that time, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"Faculty security remains a high precedence for the department," police mentioned in an announcement. 

Details on whom the teen was trying to recruit were not disclosed. Police mentioned this case stays under investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens told the college's group that the district was in close contact with police throughout this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon parts, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing threat to its colleges. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this period, we alerted our administrative and safety employees about this investigation and, as is our commonplace follow, maintained shut contact with our BPD Faculty Resource Officer on the Berkeley High School campus," Stephens wrote. "Throughout the investigation interval, we had been assured that this individual did not pose an instantaneous menace to the Berkeley Excessive College neighborhood."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion in opposition to the coed. 

In addition, a town corridor assembly titled: 'How one can Speak to Kids About School Violence' provided by Alameda County Workplace of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
