16-year-old arrested; deliberate taking pictures with explosives at Berkeley Excessive, police say

BERKELEY, Calif. - A 16-year-old boy was arrested after recruiting others to take part in a mass faculty taking pictures that might have included a bombing at Berkeley Excessive College, police say. 

The teenager was arrested Monday, when he turned himself in to police, Berkeley Police Department stated in a press release. Monday was Memorial Day and there was no college that day. 

The boy was arrested on suspicion of possessing destructive machine materials and threatening to commit against the law which will result in dying or great bodily injury.

Police mentioned they acquired a tip on Saturday that the boy was recruiting others in plans of a taking pictures that included explosives. Following the tip, police obtained and executed a search warrant for a residence. 

Police didn't say if the teen was a student at Berkeley High School.

Upon executing the search warrant, police said they found parts to explosives and assault rifles, a number of knives, and electronic items that might be used to create further weapons. 

At that point, a warrant was obtained for the teenager's arrest.

"College safety remains a high priority for the department," police said in a statement. 

Details on whom the teen was attempting to recruit were not disclosed. Police stated this case stays below investigation. 

Berkeley Unified Supt. Brent Stephens instructed the college's neighborhood that the district was in shut contact with police during this investigation. 

After police confiscated the teen's weapon components, the district relied on police expertise to evaluate any potential ongoing danger to its schools. The district communicated with police on the student's whereabouts. 

"As added precautions during this era, we alerted our administrative and security workers about this investigation and, as is our commonplace practice, maintained close contact with our BPD Faculty Useful resource Officer on the Berkeley Excessive College campus," Stephens wrote. "All through the investigation period, we have been assured that this individual didn't pose a right away threat to the Berkeley High Faculty group."

The district is conducting their very own investigation on this matter. 

The district may pursue disciplinary motion towards the coed. 

In addition, a city hall meeting titled: 'The right way to Talk to Youngsters About Faculty Violence' supplied by Alameda County Workplace of Education is scheduled for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
